MySQL error in XAMPP: MySQL shutdown unexpectedly

Option 1: The "Reconstruction" Approach

This method uses the default XAMPP backup folder to "reset" the service without losing your specific databases.

  1. Archive the Corrupt Folder: Change the name of the mysql/data directory to mysql/data_old.

  2. Generate a New Data Directory: Locate the mysql/backup folder, create a duplicate of it, and rename that copy to data.

  3. Migrate Your Databases: Transfer your specific project database folders from data_old into the new data folder. Note: Do not move the system folders (specifically mysql, performance_schema, phpmyadmin, and test).

  4. Sync the Data Dictionary: Move the ibdata1 file from data_old into your new data folder (confirm the overwrite if prompted).

  5. Restart: Open the XAMPP Control Panel and start the MySQL service.

Option 2: The "Cleanup" Approach

This method focuses on removing corrupted log files while keeping your data intact.

  1. Halt the Service: Ensure the MySQL module is fully stopped in the XAMPP Control Panel.

  2. Secure a Backup: Navigate to C:/xampp/mysql, copy the data folder, and paste it into a safe location (like your Desktop or another drive) to prevent data loss.

  3. Filter Folder Contents: Open the active C:/xampp/mysql/data directory and sort the contents by File Type.

  4. Remove Metadata: Locate and delete all items identified as INFO files.

  5. Re-initialize: Launch MySQL again from the control panel; the service should now start successfully.

Quick Tip: Before you delete anything, double-check that Port 3306 isn't being used by another program (like a standalone MySQL installation or Skype). Sometimes the "crash" is just a simple port conflict!
